Biffy Clyro / Eternal Tango

Von 5000 Zuschauern in der Brixton Academy zu gut 900 ins Kölner Gloria. Aber der kleinere Rahmen war fast der einzige Unterschied zu dem triumphalen Konzert in London, denn auch das Kölner Publikum erwies sich als sehr sangesfreudig und textsicher. Die Setlist war identisch mit der vor elf Tagen und so war es wiederum ein sehr guter Auftritt, nur die luxemburgische Vorgruppe Eternal Tango war lahm und kam natürlich nicht an Manchester Orchestra heran.

Biffy Clyro / Manchester Orchestra / Pulled Apart By Horses

Während Biffy Clyro hierzulande zwar auch schon in ausverkauften Häusern spielen, sind diese doch noch recht klein im Vergleich zu den Konzerthallen in England. In London füllten sie die ehrwürdige Brixton Academy bis auf den letzten Platz, ohne Zweifel eines der schönsten Venues überhaupt.
Zunächst tobten jedoch die Hosenscheisser von Pulled Apart By Horses über die Bühne wie ausgelassene Junggäule und lärmten dabei zum Teil arg unstrukturiert rum. Die nächste halbe Stunde gehörte dem wunderbaren Manchester Orchestra, die mich mit großer Vorfreude auf den Auftritt in Köln füllten.
Da Biffy Clyros neues Album Only Revolutions mich bis dahin noch nicht so recht fesseln konnte, war ich gespannt, wie die neuen Songs live wirken würden.  Gerade live merkte man, dass das neue Album die Richtung des Vorgängers Puzzle konsequent weiter verfolgt und dabei dennoch sehr druckvoll klingt. Außerdem wurde man von der unglaublichen Atmosphäre im alten theater mitgerissen. Optisch gab es eine tolle Lightshow und stimmlich war London auch voll der Höhe und sang geradezu Gänsehaut erzeugend mit. Insbesondere Machines mit seinem Wechselgesang im Refrain klang einfach atemberaubend.
Nach 100 Minuten war dann Schluss und ich freue mich jetzt schon auf Mai 2010, wenn ich wieder in der Academy bin, dann bei Pavement.

Though being really huge in the UK Biffy Clyro still play quite small venues in Germany but they do sell them out quickly. So having missed to buy a ticket in time I was lucky to be offered a spare ticket by a mate.
18 months ago they played the Prime Club and the most remarkable fact about this gig was that it was over at about 9pm on a saturday evening to allow the clubbers to take over from the rockers. Tonight Biffy entered the stage at half past nine and opened their set with the monumental Living Is A Problem Because Everything Dies. This was the start of an energetic set still focusing on their album Puzzle. The crowd was singing along enthusiasticly nearly to nearly all the tunes, especially to Get Fucked Stud, Who's Got A Match? and even turning Love Has A Diameter into a U2-like hymn. After about 75 minutes Biffy finished with a tremendous version of 57.
And though some classics like Questions And Answers or The Kids From Kibble... weren't played it was their best show I've seen so far.

It's been a lovely weekend with meeting some nice people again and getting to know a bunch of new cool people.
A good friend of mine visited me and accompanied me to the Rheinkultur festival in Bonn, a huge free outdoor event situated in a lovely park area at the banks of the Rhine.
I saw good performances by Olli Schulz & Der Hund Marie, The John Butler Trio and Biffy Clyro and missed out to see a bunch of other good bands as well, like Feeder. But yesterday was more about socialising which I really enjoyed.
