New Bomb Turks / Phonotones
11.07.09 Cobra, Solingen
I think there's not much to say about the qualities of the New Bomb Turks on stage. They've always been the hottest garage rock band in the world from the first time I've seen them blowing away The Devil Dogs as their opening act back in 1993 up to the last two shows at the Cobra. The first one was on their sort of comeback tour four years ago when the concert seemed to have been over, the lights had gone on and Culture Club's Karma Chameleon was played when suddenly singer Eric Davidson had taken the microphone and sang along to the tune a capella. Now they headed back to Europe for a handful of shows and again the Cobra was turned into a sauna with everyone going crazy. The focus was on their first and best album Destroy-Oh-Boy!!! starting right on with Born Tolouse-Lautrec, Tail Crush and Up For A Downslide and you wondered where the guys drew their energy from. Eric Davidson still goofed around like a madman urging the crowd during Defiled to sit down and jump up to the count of four. After 65 minutes they ended their set with Professional Againster and left behind a bunch of drunken, sweaty rockers of all ages.
I hope it doesn't take them another four years to return.
